Is Your Bird Sick? Learn How to Care for Him

The nature of birds is to hide their weaknesses (an illness) so predators don’t notice. However, this makes it difficult for you, as their owner, to tell if they have an illness. If you notice your bird has suddenly become ill, take him to the vet immediately because he may be quite far along in his illness.

The best way to care for your bird is to know his normal activities and watch for abnormal ones. The earlier you notice your bird isn’t feeling well, the easier it will be to treat.

One thing you can do to make sure your bird is maintaining his health is to weigh him regularly on an avian scale. Weight loss can point to stress or decreased intake of food and possible sickness.

If you see signs of illness, the first step is to keep the bird warm with a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel or a heat lamp; however, make sure that it is not too hot – 75 to 85 degrees F is a good temp. To keep track of the temperature in your bird’s environment, keep a thermometer close by.

Another important thing to keep in mind if your bird has stopped eating or drinking is to keep him hydrated by using plenty of fluids.

If it’s not too serious of an illness and you can care for your bird at home, it is important to keep a quiet and stress-free environment for your bird’s recovery.

-         Use a smaller cage to keep him less active and more secure.

-         Lower or remove perches so he’s not exerting the energy he needs to recover on getting up to a perch.

-         Keep food and water close so you bird can get to it easily. If he’s not eating a lot, try giving him his favorite food to keep him eating

-         Make sure he is in an environment that allows for peace and quiet. Your bird needs to relax, and a place with dimmed light is best. But, make sure there is enough light so he can find his food and water easily.

-         As much as you would like to hold him and check on him constantly, keep this to a minimum so your bird can rest.

Remember that caring for your bird is crucial to his well being. Watch his behaviors, give him good nutrition, and groom him properly. It’s all part of being a good bird owner.
