Good Beak Care

There are many shapes and size of beaks – each relating to the type of food the bird eats. However, there are similarities. Each bird’s beak is made of keratin (like what our fingernails are made of) and doesn’t have feeling at the tip of it. Usually a bird with a healthy beak uses it a lot in his everyday life – to eat, chew, play, groom, and climb. Without a healthy beak, a bird isn’t allowed to life his life as he should.

The first step to a healthy beak is good nutrition. A bird’s beak is continually growing and without the right nutrients, this growth can be altered to form an unhealthy beak. There are a couple of ways you can determine if your bird’s beak is healthy. First of all, if you notice he isn’t using it as often as he usually does, your bird’s beak is probably hurting him and you should get it checked out. Secondly, watch for an unhealthy shaped beak. There are three types of unhealthily shaped beaks: “parrot” beak, overgrown beak, and scissors beak. These shapes can form for a variety of different reasons including nutritional imbalances, genetic issues, and trauma. In order to keep your bird’s beak as healthy as possible, make sure he has proper nutrition, chew toys, vitamin and mineral supplements, and conditioning perches.
