Balance Their Diet for Good Health

Tracking Your Bird's Weight

For birds in the wild, any sign of weakness makes them an easy target for predators, so these birds are experts at hiding illness. The same is true for your pet birds. It may seem backwards, but when your bird is sick, instincts tell him to hide the disease to survive, not alert their owner so they can receive treatment and healing (what we would consider survival!)

This means it's extremely important to know your bird and his body. By the time symptoms are noticeable, it's often too late to give them effective treatment.

One way to monitor your bird's health is through his weight, which is a good indication of his overall health. A drop in weight can be an early warning sign of illness. Talk to your veterinarian about the ideal weight ranges for your bird. Weigh your birds 1-2 times a week at the same time each day, keeping track of the numbers. If you notice any significant changes, check with your veterinarian about potential diseases. By paying attention to the changes in your bird's body, you can detect illness before it's too late and keep your bird healthier longer!
