The First Week With Your new Kitten
So, you have a new kitten! Whether this is your first feline friend or you are an experienced cat owner,
bringing a new cat into your home is an exciting time! It is also a time for adjustment and learning, as
your kitten settles into his new home and as you become acquainted with each other. Your kitten needs to
learn all about his new residence – where his litter box is located, where he is going to sleep, when he
will be eating, and who his new housemates are. If your kitten has been recently weaned from his littermates
and mother, he is probably also feeling a bit lonely and lost. Preparing beforehand and following a few
“getting acquainted” rules of thumb can promote a smooth transition and help your new companion to relax
and settle in with his new family.
Preparing Beforehand
Once you have made the decision to bring a new kitten into your home, planning for his arrival can be a lot of
fun! All cats have a few basic but important needs. These include a suitable littler box, one or more scratching
posts, a safe and protected place to rest, a designated eating area, and interesting and fun toys to play with.
Suggestions are provided throughout this guide to help you select the best products for your household and for
your individual cat.

| Did You Know? |
| Cats are currently the most popular companion animal in the United States! According to a recent survey
conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturer’s Association, we currently share our homes with over 77
million cats! (By comparison, dogs come in a close second at 65 million). And, if you ever believed that cats
are “loners” who do not enjoy living with other cats, think again……almost half (49 % ) of homes with cats
include two or more feline friends! (Average number of cats per home is 2.2) |
