Preventing Overweight Conditions

Printable Version
Preventing obesity in your dog is much easier than treating it. The best way to prevent overweight conditions is to provide a correct amount of food and daily exercise for your dog. Here are some tips for maintaining your puppy’s optimal weight throughout her life:
    Overweight
  • Feed pre-measured amounts of food and closely monitor your puppy’s daily intake and weight. If she begins to gain too much weight, reduce the amount that is offered at each meal, or switch to a puppy food that contains fewer calories per cup.
  • Weigh your puppy regularly and monitor her body condition throughout growth and after she has attained her adult size. Record your dog’s weight in her health record so that you will be able to detect weight changes over time.
  • Provide regular exercise in the form of varied and fun activities. These can include daily walks, running, and swimming, playing fetch, or enjoying dog sports such as agility, Fly ball, rally, or obedience.
  • Monitor treat use: Dog treats make great rewards to use during training, but care should be taken not to over-feed. If you use training treats, measure out the amount of food treats that you will use for training each day and subtract this amount from your dog’s daily portion of food.
