Your Puppy’s Behavioral Needs
When a new puppy comes into your home, some adjustments must be made to accommodate his needs. Providing for your puppy’s behavioral needs and teaching him good “puppy manners” early in life can prevent behavior problems and will help him to grow into a well mannered companion.
- Establish a Regular Schedule: Puppies thrive on routine, so it is important to set aside a portion of time each day devoted exclusively to your puppy. This time can be spent going for walks, training, playing, grooming, or just sitting quietly and cuddling. The important feature is that daily, regular periods of time are provided, during which your puppy can count on your undivided attention.
- Socialize your Puppy: Puppies benefit from regular experiences with new people and places. The golden rule of socialization is to plan ahead and take proper precautions so that your puppy’s new experiences are positive and enjoyable. Avoid overwhelming him with crowds or excessively noisy surroundings. Daily walks are a great way for puppies to meet friendly adults and children. In addition, introduce your puppy to short car rides, to other puppies and friendly dogs, and to visitors who come to your home.
- Exercise and Play: Daily exercise and play should be incorporated into your puppy’s routine. Walking, swimming and retrieving all provide opportunities for exercise and training and are enjoyable for you and your pup. If your puppy learns to expect these activities at certain times of the day, he will also nap and rest regularly, which contribute to good manners and calm behavior.
- Quiet Time: Make sure your puppy has regular opportunities for “quiet time” during the day. Although puppies are very active, they require frequent opportunities for rest throughout the day. If your puppy sleeps in a crate at night, his crate can be used for naps during the day.
