Dental Disease is Common in Cats

It is estimated that more than 80% of adult cats have some degree of periodontal (gum) disease. Another common dental disorder, called odontoclastic resorptive lesions, affects up to 60% of cats! These painful lesions cause weakening of the affected tooth, eventually causing the tooth to break off near the gum line. In both diseases, cats experience inflammation, pain, and infection.

Early signs of dental disease are often not apparent to owners and it is not until the disease is advanced that many cats show pain or refuse to eat. Therefore, good preventive care in the form of home examinations, frequent brushing and regular veterinary check-ups are essential to keep your cat’s teeth and mouth healthy throughout life.
