Dental Care

While cats do not develop cavities from tooth decay in the same way that humans do, they are susceptible to periodontal (gum) disease and tooth loss. Periodontal disease is caused by a buildup of plaque and calculus on the teeth and under the gums. It is a chronic disease, developing over several years and resulting in bad breath, inflamed and receded gums, loose and infected teeth, and eventual loss of teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can become systemic and cause serious illness.

Feeding your cat primarily dry type food rather than canned food contributes to a healthier mouth, but dry food alone will not maintain healthy gums and teeth. A program of routine dental care is the best approach to preventing gum disease in your kitten.

The best way to keep your kitten's mouth clean and healthy is to brush her teeth regularly, throughout her life. This is a simple procedure that takes only a few minutes to complete and is easy to teach.

  • Use a special cat-sized toothbrush or one that fits over your index finger, along with a dental solution or toothpaste that is made specifically for cats.
  • Do not use human toothpaste because these products are not intended to be swallowed and some will foam in the cat's mouth. Also, many pet toothpastes are flavored to appeal specifically to cats and help make the brushing enjoyable.
  • Begin by working on just a few teeth, gradually working up to your kitten’s entire mouth as she becomes accustomed to the taste of the toothpaste and to the feel of the brush.
  • Examine your cat’s mouth and brush her teeth several times per week to prevent calculus and plaque build-up. If you cannot brush this frequently, rinse your cat’s mouth with a dental solution that is formulated for cats.
In addition to the home dental care that you provide, your veterinarian should examine your cat's teeth during routine visits. Periodic cleaning while under general anesthesia may be necessary to remove any hardened plague that has built up on your cat’s teeth and prevent dental disease.
